Rory McIlroy shows true colours with how he greeted Joe LaCava at US Open
How Rory McIlroy greeted Patrick Cantlay’s caddie Joe LaCava before the final round of the 2024 US Open cracked up golf fans.
When the final round tee times were announced for the 2024 US Open, one pairing stood out.
And clearly that was Rory McIlroy pitted against his 2023 Ryder Cup nemesis Patrick Cantlay and his looper Joe LaCava.
McIlroy, 35, famously tore into LaCava and Team USA last September in Rome during the biennial showdown.
The Northern Irishman was simply incandescent with rage over LaCava’s actions.
Long story short, LaCava celebrated – in McIlroy’s opinion – for far too long and crossed a line.
McIlroy later explained his displeasure with LaCava, suggesting that he wasn’t afforded the same opportunity as his American counterpart to sink a crucial putt.
It’s all water under the bridge of course.
And McIlroy even joked with LaCava about what happened as Europe celebrated their victory.
But we do know that McIlroy and Cantlay butted heads over the past year or so, coming to blows on the PGA Tour’s policy board as the North American’s circuit’s biggest stars attempted to work out what to do in the face of the LIV Golf threat.
So how, exactly, would McIlroy handle the moment at Pinehurst No.2?
According to CBS reporter Kyle Porter, McIlroy simply winked at LaCava and told Tiger Woods’ former caddie: “Let’s have a good day.”
It was fair to say McIlroy was fired up.
He made a birdie straight out of the gate to pull within two of the 54-hole leader Bryson DeChambeau.
