This is definitely our redemption tour. I feel like we all have more to give,” Simone Biles told reporters during a late-night press conference on Sunday, June 30, shortly after being selected to the team women’s gymnastics team headed to the Paris Olympics next month. Biles will compete alongside Sunee Lee, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles and Hezly Rivera.
The four skaters, excluding Rivera, also competed together at the 2021 Tokyo Games, winning a silver medal in the team event and five individual medals, including Lee’s gold in the individual all-around. But their experience was somewhat overshadowed by Biles’ struggles at the time: She suddenly withdrew from most activities, citing her mental health and “surprises,” and her teammates had to unexpectedly step in in his absence.
On Sunday, Lee and Biles floated the idea of ”redemption” in the form of a return to another Olympic competition. “We were in the best situation … but we go there and think we have a lot of weight on our shoulders to prove that we are better than athletes. Bills said. “We are more mature. We are smarter and more consistent.”
“We know that it’s stronger than what we showed in Tokyo. So I think it has to be for us because it can\’t be for anybody else, ‘cause that’s not why we do it. We do it for ourselves and the love for the sport and the love for representing the U.S.,” she said. “So we\’re going to go out there and we\’re going to do our best.”
Biles addressed a range of other topics — how she defines her success, relishing the support of husband Jonathan Owens and what it feels like to age in a sport that has famously prioritized youth.
Now 27, Biles leads a generation of women who are pushing past that preconceived notion. And she’s willing to playfully admit she’s wrong.
When asked in 2016 about her past behavior on the team with then-22-year-old captain Aly Riseman, Biles now jokes, “I definitely have to apologize for calling Aly ‘grandma,’ because I think it’s so cool, like someone older. I remember now calling her grandma when we were younger.
“So what’s 11 p.m.? So it\’s definitely past my bedtime — so I know Aly would be cracking up right now. But yeah, it is crazy. I am much older and more mature. What was the remaining question? See, I forget!
This prompted her to talk about how she approaches recovery now, rather than then.
“After the first day of testing, I was very surprised that I could walk. So I was like, “Wow, actually it doesn’t hurt that much, it doesn’t hurt.” “… Please be strong. I have to take it a little more seriously,” she said. “When I came back to Rio [in 2016], I could do anything. I didn’t need any tapes or anything. I was just like a little hamster on a wheel, always running.”

After Tokyo, Biles took a lengthy break from competing. She said her comeback was made possible thanks to many people, including teammates, therapists and medical staff.
“It really does take a village. So I think people are in awe of what I’m doing and I’m like to myself, ‘Oh my God, I’m still doing it.’ I’m still capable,” she said. \”Well, let’s go.\”
Owens, whom she married in April 2023, will also be by her side during Paris’ games. The Chicago Bears are “actually giving him a few days off from training camp, so he’ll only be there for a short period of time,” she says.
When asked about her support, including a memorable reaction when he saw her during a tryout, she said, “I think it’s so exciting that we’re in each other’s shoes and we can support each other’s dreams and goals.”
“These memories that we’ve made, they’ll never come back,” she added. “So anytime we can show up for each other and support each other, we’re really excited. A lot.”
