Romain Grosjean spent five Formula 1 seasons under Gunther Steiner at Haas. After leaving the Italian national team, Grosjean reacted to the news of his former boss’ sudden transfer. Former Haas Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean has reacted to the team’s management changes at Kannapolis ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Haas announced earlier this week that Gunther Steiner will not return to his role as team leader when the new season begins later this year. He will be replaced by Ayao Komatsu, who will take on the role of Director of Engineering after becoming part of the Haas organization for the first time.

Grosjean has extensive experience working with Komatsu, having been the Frenchman’s race engineer at Lotus before moving together to Haas. Grosjean spent five seasons with the US team, joining in 2016 before leaving at the end of the 2020 season following a horrific crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Grosjean expressed his delight at Komatsu’s promotion and 13 podiums, although he said he did not understand much of what happened behind the scenes when Steiner left. “I don’t know what happened,” Grosjean said.

“I don’t know the details except you, but I wish Gunther all the best in his next chapter. “He’s definitely a guy with a lot of ideas and a lot to do, but the most important thing for me is that Ayao is really happy.”

Grosjean switched to IndyCar racing after retiring from F1 at the end of 2020 and will work with Juncos Juncos Hollinger Racing next year.

Despite his F1 days behind him, Grosjean maintains a strong friendship with Komatsu. The Tokyo-born engineer was now tasked with rousing Haas from his slumber at the bottom of the grid. Grosjean said the mission would be a “huge challenge”.

“Yes, I saw the news like most of us. I’m very happy for Komatsu,” said the Frenchman. “First of all, he is a very good friend to me. I participated in all Formula 1 races, 181 times. “His kids are the same age as ours so we’ve become really good friends and I’m happy for him. “It was a big challenge for him, but I’m happy for him.”
