Cleveland Browns Undergo Major Staff Overhaul Following Playoff Loss

The Cleveland Browns are undergoing a major overhaul after their playoff loss.

The Cleveland Browns made significant changes to their personnel following their playoff loss, bringing major changes to the team’s coaching staff. Alex Van Pelt, the team’s standout offensive coordinator in 2020, has left the Browns, but it’s unclear if he was fired or decided to leave. His departure came after an injury-riddled season highlighted by a 7-10 record.

Additional personnel change

In addition to Van Pelt’s departure, two other coaches opened the door. Running backs coach Stump Mitchell, who has been an integral part of the 2019 team, was fired and T. McCartney’s contract was not renewed. The changes highlight a broader evaluation strategy led by coach Kevin Stefanski, who orchestrated similar moves last season and saw the defense and special teams improve with the introduction of new players. Consequences of major repairs

Despite major changes to the coaching staff, Stefanski successfully led the Browns to the playoffs twice in four seasons. The team’s offense ranked 13th in total yards and 10th in scoring heading into the 2023 season despite rotating between five different quarterbacks. This reorganization can be seen as Stefanski’s strategy to infuse new ideas into the offensive team, which aims to build an offensive line around quarterback Deshaun Watson and overcome last season’s slump.

What’s next for the Browns? As the Browns move forward, they are expected to bring in new hires in the coming days. The focus is now on defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who will be scouted for a head coaching job elsewhere in the NFL. This move could further shake up the Browns’ coaching staff. Stefanski’s adaptability and knack for recruiting skilled assistants could be key in navigating those changes and leading the Browns to success.
