US Ryder Cup presidents expect an unprecedented turnaround for Tiger Woods
After losing Marco Simone to Team USA in 2023, Tiger Woods received more support to succeed Jack Johnson as captain.
Tiger Woods is now expected to lead Team USA at the 2025 Ryder Cup in New York.
Three-time Ryder Cup star Hunter Mahan has named Tiger Woods as Team USA captain for the next two games as he seeks revenge for defeat at Rome 2023.
The 15-time major winner was largely absent as Zach Johnson led his compatriot to a 16-12 loss to Marco Simona. The European side have left their opponents winless on the road since 1993 and have suffered seven consecutive defeats on trips to the United States.
As the United States seek quick revenge in New York next year, calls for Woods to step up as Johnson’s successor are growing. Other contenders, including Phil Mickelson and former vice-captain Stuart Sink, had mixed reactions to the prospect of a move to the top job.
He has ruled himself out in the past, saying he was too “divided” to take on the role of captain. The latter admitted, however, that he would have liked to be captain, but suggested Woods as the best candidate, admitting: “I think it’s up to him.”
