John Fury: Tyson Probably Took Everything Out of Deontay Wilder, Otto Wallin
Last month, heavyweights Otto Wallin and Deontay Wilder fought separately on a doomsday card in Saudi Arabia.
In the co-feature, Wilder suffered an embarrassing loss to former world champion Joseph Parker, losing by knockout in 12 rounds. In the main event, Wallin was stopped by Anthony Joshua in five rounds.
WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury beat Wallin in 12 rounds and beat Wilder twice. Tyson’s father, John Fury, was a keen observer of the Day of Reckoning books.
He felt that Wallin and Wilder were not the fighters that Tyson had beaten years ago. “Otto Wallin was not afraid of Anthony Joshua. AJ seemed like a man on a mission. Wallin didn’t come like Deontay Wilder ever did [against Joseph Parker],” John Fury told Seconds Out.
“I’ve never seen anything worse than Wilder in my life. I saw two different people in Wallin and Wilder. Everyone who fought Tyson is different. “Tyson probably got a lot out of it.”
Fury, 35, is set to return to the ring on February 17 in a non-high-stakes contest against IBO, WBA, WBO and IBF Alexander Usyk. Last October, Fury came up short against MMA veteran Francis Ngannou in a crossover boxing match.
Usyk is a completely different type of fighter in terms of size and ability. His father John warned his son to make the necessary adjustments to defeat the Usyk-style warriors.
“He needs a completely different style from Usyk. He is completely different. Go back a few years and you can see it on the internet. Jerry Cooney-Michael Spinks,” said John Fury.
“Michael Spinks is a lightweight, weighing just over 14kg. Jerry Cooney is 6ft tall and 18 stone. Look what happened. These speedsters, you can’t be honest. What do you think if we want to keep looking for bombs for these types of fighters? I see him coming and avoid him.
“Usyk is very good, he moves well, he has a good head, he has good feet, the style of Deontay Wilder and Francis Ngannou is not good enough for someone like Usyk.”
