Toto Wolff gives latest update on Lewis Hamilton’s F1 future

Toto Wolff has offered a new insight into Lewis Hamilton’s F1 future, saying the Mercedes deal was signed “emotionally”.

Hamilton’s future remains interesting throughout the 2023 season, with his contract expiring at the end of this season. He is yet to sign a new contract with Mercedes, so has been linked with Ferrari in recent weeks, which could open the door for a surprise exit.

However, Hamilton has consistently stated that he still intends to extend his stay at Mercedes, Wolff and other key team figures have said the same, and the Mercedes team boss has once again stated that it is only a matter of time before to a real. the agreement is signed. . Time is far away. He told Sky Sports earlier this weekend:

“Nation, I didn’t sign, I signed emotionally.”

There is no word yet on when an announcement will be made, but until then there will no doubt be speculation about his future.

However, it would be a huge shock to see him leave Mercedes after so many years, and the most likely outcome is that he will extend his stay at the team sooner rather than later. Hamilton still has a chance to win today in Hungary as he will be on pole for the Hungarian GP.

It will take some effort to beat Max Verstappen during the race, but Hamilton is up for the challenge. He said of Saturday’s cake jump:

“I don’t think I rested my whole knee. It’s a weird feeling, like I’m holding my breath and out of breath at the end. “I’ve been doing sports for a long time and I’ve been successful, but I think this is the first time. It’s hard to describe how special it feels. We didn’t expect a fight for pole today.

“George [Russell] took pole last year and looked great, while these guys [Red Bull] looked very strong [this year], but of course I wanted to go as high as possible. By the time I got into Q2 I was suddenly looking okay and by the second round of Q3 I was a tenth off Max and I knew I was going to spend more time in the car.

“[During the last round], I think we had to drop out and hopefully we’ll stay on track and I think we’re closing in on them at least in [some] areas, but our last segment was particularly strong. It’s been very good and I’m very happy for everyone in the team.

Here’s a look at the race:

”Usually it’s not a bad race car, but we usually have good race speeds. I think Max’s race pace yesterday was very special. I think they were much faster than us. But there are ways to hold the position and maybe we even have a fighting chance. “There is no doubt that we have a great competition ahead of us.”
