On Sunday, sophomore Nick Dunlap will try to do the unthinkable: win on the PGA Tour as an amateur. Dunlap entered Sunday’s American Express with a significant lead after shooting a 12-under 60 on Saturday to take a three-stroke lead over Sam Burns and Justin Thomas through 54 holes, the lowest amateur score since Patrick Cantlay . He also received the same score at the 2011 Travelers Championship. Both points are the lowest since 1983.
With Sunday’s victory, Dunlap became the first golfer since Tiger Woods to win both the U.S. Junior, as well as the U.S. Amateur, a rare feat in golf. The 20-year-old University of Alabama star will become the first professional to win on the PGA Tour as an amateur since Phil Mickelson in 1991. That’s a rare feat in this era of golf.
Thomas, a member of the Tide, tries to stop Dunlap from exploring history. His win would be his first since the 2022 PGA Championship and would give him a chance for a refreshing victory after a disastrous 2023. Of course, Dunlap’s potential victory comes with financial stakes. Fortunately for everyone else in Palm Springs, money doesn’t disappear into the ether. If Dunlap wins, the money goes to the next player. That means Thomas, Burns or the runner-up will get a $1.5 million check.
