Nick Dunlap, a 19-year-old college star, is on pace to become the first amateur to win a PGA Tour event since 31-year-old Phil Mickelson in 1991.
Dunlap entered this week’s American Express in California heading into Sunday’s final round on top of the standings, three times ahead of runner-up Sam Burns. The teenager found himself 12 under on Saturday after a perfect round of 60.
Dunlap posted 10 birdies and an eagle in the third round of the Masters to become the fourth and final birdie in PGA Tour history with 18 holes remaining. The teenager is no stranger to the spotlight, having won the US Amateur Championship last summer. Dunlap became only the second golfer to win both the U.S. Amateur as well as U.S. Junior Am.
