Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny have paid tribute to the former Wrexham manager following his death.
On Saturday, Reynolds and McElhenny received word via social media that racecourse manager Roger Lloyd had died. The post described how Roger played in Wrexham’s home game against Newport County on December 23 before being taken to hospital on Christmas Eve.
Roger spent 50 years on the racecourse and 48 years as manager of the Welsh Club. A message sent to Reynolds, McElhenney and other members of the Wrexham hierarchy, including CEO Humphrey Kerr, included details of a planned tribute to Roger.
McElhenney responded to the post, paying emotional tribute to Roger and explaining what it would be like for the club if he received compensation in the club’s next home game. Wrexham return to the Hippodrome on New Year’s Day with a 48th minute winner against League Two rivals Barrow.
“So sorry to hear that,” McElhenny wrote in a post Saturday night on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Sending love to your entire family. I am delighted to share this honor and we will do our best to show our gratitude to this wonderful man.”
Reynolds, who owns Wrexham, responded to McElhenny’s post to pay tribute to Roger. Reynolds: “48 years! [broken heart emoji],” she wrote.
News of Roger’s death sparked many tributes from Wrexham fans on social media. In response to the original message to McElhenny and Reynolds, one fan wrote: “My heart goes out to you and all of Roger’s family and friends. “I always spoke to him on game days, he was such a lovely guy and he will be missed.”
Another fan said: “My condolences to the whole family. “After 48 years of faithful service, I salute you at 48 minutes,” said another netizen, “My deepest condolences to all his family and friends. I had the pleasure of knowing Roger for over 30 years at the Racecourse and Rock. Always a perfect gentleman. He will be greatly missed. May he rest in eternal peace.’
