Scottish cinema protests Tiger Woods takeover

A cinema in Scotland had its busiest daytime weekend for a long time, according to protest organizers.

They said residents, students and other supporters gathered throughout the day to support The New Picture House cinema in St Andrews. The 92-year-old cinema, the university town’s only cinema, has been acquired by an American company that plans to turn it into a world-class sports and entertainment complex.

American superstars Tiger Woods and Justin Timberlake are shareholders in American Nexus Luxury Collection, which announced plans in October. He is already based in New York.

The company has confirmed it is moving ahead despite community opposition. Ash Johann Curry-Machado, 22, one of the event’s organizers and president of the St Andrews Film Society, said he planned to demonstrate this to cinema owners and Fife Coo.
