Phillies Claim Hard-Throwing Ex-Red Sox Hurler Off Waivers Continuing Rollercoaster Offseason

The Phillies claimed the former Red Sox pitcher off waivers as they continue their roller coaster offseason.

The former Boston Red Sox has had a roller coaster offseason.

Caleb Orth spent parts of the last three seasons with the Red Sox. He had a poor performance last season, appearing in 21 games and posting a 6.26 ERA with 9 strikeouts in 24 at bats in 23 innings.

Oert suffered an injury during the 2023 campaign and was placed on the 60-day disabled list. He was eventually granted full waivers and claimed by the Seattle Mariners in October.

He was eventually drafted by the Miami Marlins in December, but had a short stint with the organization. Orth was there on February 7, looking for his next opportunity.

The veteran right-hander appeared to have found that out when he was claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. “The Phillies made the following roster moves today: Claimed (right-hander) Caleb Orth off waivers from the Miami Marlins,” the club said. “I designated (infielder) Diego Castillo to replace Ort on the 40-man roster.”

It’s unclear what his role will be in the Philadelphia organization, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him at the big league level at some point. After claiming a waiver, the club must place the player on the club’s 40-man roster.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Ort make his debut in the minor leagues, but he could get a chance if he puts up impressive performances in spring training. The 32-year-old was quick last season and had s

ome upside.
