Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Enzo Fernandes will miss the game between Wolves and Chelsea on Christmas Eve.
The World Cup winner was sent off after 32 minutes of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup win over Newcastle on Tuesday.
The midfielder looked unwell as he left the pitch and his manager later said he was “sick”. When Fernández reappeared to encourage the crowd, she was seen crying loudly, suggesting she may have suffered serious injuries. Those fears have allayed, but the Argentina international is suffering from a hernia and will miss the Blues’ next game, although he hopes to return soon.
“Enzo will not play against Wolves,” Pochettino said at Friday’s pre-match press conference. “We’ll see if he can re-engage as soon as possible.
“You have information that the person has a hernia and is not feeling well. We provide care to doctors.
“It won’t be a problem for me. “I think I’ll be back in the team soon,” he said.
The update saw Chelsea permanently rule out 10 players for the Wolves game, including captain Reece James, who will be out for four months after hamstring surgery.
One of the players returning from injury is Christopher Nkunku, who made his debut as a substitute against Newcastle, but Pochettino ruled the forward out of the starting line-up at Molineux. “After seeing him play from the start, it is still too early to see the start of the game. “We will look at him in the starting line-up in the next few weeks,” Pochettino said in the pre-match press conference. “We have to be patient. You have to give it time. We have to give him a chance to show his best side. “Everyone is excited because everyone wants to see him play. We know he has the qualities and the ability to help the team in a positive way.”
