Lewis Hamilton has identified a key F1 problem in the image of the Mercedes team that he wants to fix.

Lewis Hamilton regularly uses his F1 platform to advocate for diversity in motorsport and society in general and was given renewed motivation after what he saw during a photo shoot in Abu Dhabi.

Lewis Hamilton believes more needs to be done to increase diversity in Formula 1 after being absent from the Mercedes team picture.

As is tradition, the team took a photo in the pit lane of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to mark the end of the regular season. The team’s track crew gathered behind the two cars and drivers Hamilton and George Russell for photographs.

 

But as he sat there, Hamilton noticed that in the crowd behind him were people from underrepresented groups. And he addressed it as he reflected on the progress made since the Hamilton Commission was launched four years ago.

“This is a long process that started here in 2019,” he said. “I’m not going to lie, I took a team photo and I looked at it and thought, ‘Damn, we have so much to do.'”

“The Man in Three Colors (photo). There is more [in the background], but it has to change. Compared to 2019, I’m sure it hasn’t moved as much as expected. “So it’s hard to see how we can change that.”

Through his philanthropy, Hamilton has worked to change things at the grassroots level.
