Bitter PGA Tour member John Rahe was named Scotty Scheffler Player of the Year after defying him after the $500
Bitter PGA Tour member John Rahe was named Scotty Scheffler Player of the Year after defying him after the $500 million LIV conversion. Despite the fact that the Spaniard won several events and the Masters.
Scheffler became the first back-to-back winner since Tiger Woods in 2006-2007. The world No. 1 had the best statistical season since Woods in every major category, from balls to greens to top scorers.
He has the seventh-lowest total score (68.63) in PGA Tour history (six behind Woods) and has six top-10 finishes in 23 tournaments in a season that began in September 2022. At one point, Scheffler had 18 consecutive starts, and his worst finish was 12th.
“Anything voted on by my peers is very special to me, and to take home a trophy two years in a row is very special,” Scheffler said. “Everything we’ve done over the last year … I’m proud of that consistency.”
That’s despite Scheffler (left) being slightly ahead of Masters champion John Rahm (right).
What he lacked compared to Ram was victory. Scheffler won the Players Championship and the Phoenix Open. However, Rahm won four times, including his second major at the Masters. The PGA Tour said voting took place Dec. 1-Dec. 15. Lahm, who has been supporting the tournament for 18 months and wears an LIV letterman jacket, announced last December that he would join the rival Saudi-funded league. 7th place in transactions worth 500 million dollars.
Scheffler received 38 percent of the vote in what was considered a closely contested race, according to the tournament. He did not disclose the share of votes received by Rahm, FedEx Cup champion Victor Hovland, U.S. champion Open Wyndham Clarke or Rory McIlroy.
The tournament has not previously disclosed the total number of votes for the award. The percentage of players who voted is now hidden.
In another fierce competition, Eric Cole beat Sweden’s Ludwig Aberg to win the Player of the Year award. This award comes 50 years after Cole’s mother, Laura Baugh, won the LPGA Rookie of the Year award.
In late 2023, Rahm made a surprise move from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf.
Cole was the only player to advance to the second round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He played golf in the minor leagues for several years and won $5 million in his first year on tour.
Scheffler said last month that stability is important in the Bahamas, but “his vote will go to Rahm because we’re playing to win this game.”
Asked if he was surprised by the win, Scheffler said it all came down to what was most important to the players who voted. “I think my consistency has been appreciated this year,” Scheffler said. The way I’ve played all year, I think there’s only been a few starts that I’ve thought weren’t great, but other than that, there’s been a lot of starts where I’ve played really solid golf. To do that for a whole season is very difficult for me.”
Cole was also a consistent player. This is especially true for someone who only played two regular PGA Tour events before receiving their card. At 35, he becomes the oldest Player of the Year since Todd Hamilton in 2004. Other honorees included Eric Cole, who was named tournament rookie of the year;
Cole had two second-place finishes and two third-place finishes, performing well enough to break into the top 50 of the world rankings and qualify for the Masters.
Aberg only turned professional in June. He tied the PGA Tour record with a 72-hole score of 253 and won the season-ending RSM Classic.
He left Texas Tech in June to compete in the European Ryder Cup in September after previously winning on the European Tour. Aberg has appeared in 11 games since turning pro. Cole may have been rewarded for his rookie season after appearing in 37 games over a 15-month season.
