F1 team principal expecting HUGE driver shake-up in 2024
Haas F1 team principal Gunther Steiner has predicted that up to five drivers could be replaced on the current grid before the end of the 2024 season.
This year, the Silly Season slowed down a bit, with each team deciding to stick with the drivers that finished in 2023. The most recent seat confirmed was that of F1 debutant Logan Sargeant at Williams. James Vowles has decided to stay with the youth team as he prepares for his second season in charge of the Grove outfit.
And while Steiner believes his rivals’ bosses could be up to something, the Haas boss suggests there could be a move to younger talent on the field. “I think there’s a lot of potential at the end of 2024, especially around the 25-year-olds. I think there’s a lot of potential for younger drivers to come in,” Steiner told Sky Sports.
“Because some of them are currently in their 24th year, or will be in their 24th year, and they may not be driving anymore. “Some of them don’t perform, nobody supports them. For some, I think it’s a better opportunity to take a risk with a young driver than to keep someone who doesn’t perform.”
“Everyone was afraid of the new student. [Oscar Piastri] came in and responded well right away,” Steiner added.
“Now we look at things like this and say, ‘Okay, it worked for Piastri, why isn’t it working for someone else?’ Now there’s history right there.”
“So in year 25 you might suddenly have three, four, five new hires with no change in year 24 … I think that could happen.”
