Throw back when Tiger Woods has admitted he has no idea how will qualify for the 2024 US Open
Tiger Woods has admitted he has no idea how he will qualify for the 2024 US Open next summer.
Tiger Woods, the first 15-time winner in 30 years, has admitted he is not sure how he will fare at next year’s US Open.
Woods has played in just one tournament (Hero World Challenge) and the PNC Championship with his son Charlie since undergoing ankle surgery last April and has not competed at Winged Foot in 2020 following the amputation. The 2019 Masters victory qualified him for the next five US Opens, but the streak ended and Woods dropped to world No. 901.
So with less than seven months to go until the Pinehurst Tournament, Woods’ path to participation remains unclear. “I don’t know,” he said at the PNC Championship. “I don’t know what happened, who Jack [Nicklaus] is, what happened in his career, Tom [Watson] or anybody else. Tiger Woods and son Charlie Woods are scheduled to compete in the PNC Championship this weekend.
“But not now, I won’t get involved. If I should ask formally or not, if I will get a phone call, if I will get a discount or not. Who knows if you’ll qualify.
The last time Woods did not automatically qualify for a major was the 1996 PGA Championship as an amateur. He may need a special exemption to participate in the 2024 US Open, which would set a historic precedent.
As Sports Illustrated noted, Nicklaus had eight major cuts in the tournament, while Arnold Palmer had five. Woods, pictured with winner Scotty Scheffler, placed 18th at the Hero World Challenge.
Woods finished 18th out of 20 players at the Hero World Challenge held in the Bahamas from November 30 to December 3.
He told the Golf Channel after the event that he would like to compete in 12 tournaments in 2024 and said that seemed like a “reasonable” plan. “I think the best case scenario is probably one tournament a month,” he said last Tuesday. “I think it’s real. Maybe we should start with Genesis [in February] and Players in March. But for now, the biggest events are scheduled to happen once a month, so we’re ready for that. “Now we have to prepare. I think this week was a big step in that direction.”
