George Russell and Lewis Hamilton had some key moments in their battle for a place in 2023.

Despite repeated clashes with Lewis Hamilton in 2023, George Russell dismissed any suggestion of tension between the pair ahead of the 2024 season, saying the pair still “trust each other”. 2023 was a memorable season for Russell as he overtook Hamilton for the 2022 Drivers’ Championship, becoming the third team-mate of the seven-time world champion to achieve the feat.

He had three main interests with the 38-year-old, one of which led to Hamilton’s retirement. Their first moment of concern came at the Spanish Grand Prix, which will start the 2023 season. Two Mercedes drivers had a freak collision at the start/finish line.

Russell passed Hamilton without realizing he was already there, sending the winner of his 103rd race on the turf. Fortunately, both drivers survived the accident.

At the Japanese Grand Prix, where both drivers battled for places, both survived until the end of the season. Hamilton, who was struggling in the early stages, ran too far at Spoon Curve, sending him and Russell off the track.

Russell wonders what’s going on, but they both survive. Unfortunately, both drivers escaped unscathed on the first lap of the Qatar Grand Prix, contact at the first corner sending Hamilton into the gravel and out of the race.

This incident was actually Hamilton’s fault, but it was another example of the two becoming too close. A double podium would actually have been possible had the pair not crashed at the first corner in Qatar.

It’s no secret that Russell and Hamilton’s relationship was tested last season. But the former Williams driver was adamant they would always give each other “plenty of room to fight”. “I think we trust each other, too. It can be tense, it can be difficult, but we trust each other,” Russell said, as reported by FormulaNerds. “We know we definitely give each other enough room to fight without going over the edge.”

“Obviously Qatar had a bit of a misunderstanding in the first round,” Russell said. “This is another opportunity to get another podium or even get that win that I missed.”
