Boston Red Sox fans are calling for the organization to secure their loyal assets after a second straight last-place finish.
Two key players in free agency are lefties Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, both of whom would significantly improve the Red Sox pitching staff. While these additions are fun to dream about and could still happen, Red Sox baseball boss Craig Breslow appears to be much more bullish on the trade market.
“The Boston Red Sox could use both left-handers after sending Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves, but they could be more active now that they have more time to explore the trade market,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote Wednesday. Breslow has shown a penchant for trading early and it doesn’t look like he’s slowing down anytime soon. Among the many options the Red Sox could explore is the rising star of the Miami Marlins. “Miami, under new general manager Peter Bendix, is holding auditions for every player except right-hander Yuri Perez,” Passon wrote. “(Jesus) Luzardo is definitely the most valuable player of all. He is far more valuable than NL batting champion Luis Arraes, and whether the Red Sox, Orioles (Baltimore) or any team in New York, Luzardo will look solid in their rotation. For the next three seasons… Luzardo had a 3.58 ERA, 208-for-55 strikeout rate, .239 batting average and 1.21 WHIP in 178 2/3 innings last season.
The 26-year-old left-hander is expected to be similar to Brian Belo. Because the two could form a dynamic duo with the help of a veteran with years of experience in Boston. The Red Sox’ investment in Vaughn Grissom, who is expected to be the club’s primary second baseman next season, could open the door to a trade involving Boston’s pool of center field prospects.
Breslow is also interested in outfielder Teoscar Hernandez, who is expected to sign soon. If the Red Sox acquire a slugger, outfielders Jarren Duran, Villers Abreu or Sedanna Rafaela could also be on the block.
If Breslow wants to make another big splash on the trade market, Luzardo seems like the most likely target. Scott Neville covers the Boston Red Sox in Sports Illustrated’s new “Inside The Red Sox” page. He started the NESN team after graduating from Merrimack College in 2021.
