The Red Sox want to sign former Miami Marlins shortstop Jorge Soler, 12, a former World Series MVP. MLB insider Hector Gomez said Sunday that the Red Sox have been “very aggressive” in negotiations to sign free agent Jorge Soler.
According to Gomez, Boston is now considered the favorite to sign Soler. Soler, 31, is a two-time World Series champion (2016 with the Chicago Cubs and 2021 with the Atlanta Braves). In the win, Soler was named World Series MVP after hitting three home runs in the championship round against the Houston Astros.
Soler was also selected as an All-Star by the Miami Marlins last season and led the AL in 2019, including 48 home runs by the Kansas City Royals. The Red Sox plan to shed salary this winter, and the Braves recently moved to Soler’s former team.
But that doesn’t stop them from strategically spending on underperforming free agents (eg, former All-Star pitchers).
Soler, who is a power hitter but strikes out a lot and has trouble getting on base without long balls, could also fit Boston’s profile.
