Tiger Woods already struggling to meet 2024 PGA Tour aim after confirming Nike split
Tiger Woods originally planned to compete once a month until 2024, but it appears the 15-time champion will not compete for the remainder of January.
Tiger Woods is about to clear the first hurdle in his plan to compete on the PGA Tour once a month by 2024. Woods has been forced to work part-time in recent years after suffering injuries that have career-endangered in a car accident in February 2021. Woods has qualified just three times in 2023, including once at the Masters in April, when he suffered an ankle injury midway through the tournament and was forced to withdraw. The problem sidelined the 15-time major champion for eight months before he returned at the Hero World Challenge last month. Before returning to the Bahamas, Woods had planned to play once a month after the new year to improve his schedule after three years of fitness problems.
But it looks like the 82-time PGA Tour winner will skip January. The circuit began its season without Woods at Sentry last week, and the 48-year-old is expected to start the season in February because he was not listed for the American Express or Farmers Insurance Open.
Woods also said he would delay his return until next month, confirming the end of his 27-year relationship with Nike Golf. Woods has been with Nike since turning pro in 1996 and has become one of the brand’s most iconic athletes.
But in 2024, he will be racing without the famous swoosh on his chest and announced the news in an emotional statement on Monday. “27 years ago, I was lucky enough to work with one of the most iconic brands in the world,” he wrote in X.
“The days that followed were filled with so many wonderful moments and memories that if I could name them, they could go on forever. [Former Nike CEO] Phil Knight’s passion and vision brought the Nike and Nike Golf partnership together.” Woods continued:
“I’d like to personally thank him, along with the Nike staff and the incredible athletes I’ve had the pleasure of working with.” Woods told fans he would see them next time in Los Angeles. His return will take place at the Genesis Invitational in LA next month. Tiger Woods beat Nike when compared to Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Roger Federer.
The five-time green jacket winner has been closely associated with the event, having been named host of the tournament in 2017. One of Woods’ three appearances in 2023 was at the Riviera last year, where he finished the week tied for 45th after shot 1 over the par. We were weak in the 4th round. Woods could return to TPC Sawgrass for the Players Championship in March if he returns to the once-a-month schedule going forward. Of course, the Masters takes place in April before the PGA Championship, followed by the US Open and the US Open in May, June and July. It remains to be seen what Woods’ plans are after his senior season. The American will no doubt set his sights on the FedEx Cup playoffs in August, but the limited schedule means he will need to add win number 83 to his tally to get what he wants. The season ends. cut
