Tiger Woods announces he and Nike are parting ways after nearly three decades, hints at ‘another chapter’
One of the most popular sports sponsorships in history is officially coming to an end.
Tiger Woods announced Monday that he and Nike are parting ways after more than 27 years together. Woods thanked the clothing giant’s founder Phil Knight and spoke of a “new chapter” in a message on Twitter.
“27 years ago I was lucky enough to collaborate with one of the most iconic brands in the world. The next few days are filled with so many amazing moments and memories that I could cherish forever if I could name them. Phil Knight’s passion and vision brought together the Nike and Nike Golf partnership. I would like to personally thank him, the Nike staff and the amazing athletes I have had the pleasure of working with. People ask if there is another chapter. Yes, there will definitely be another chapter. See you in LA!”
Nike has relaunched its iconic Tiger Woods shoe from 2013. Here’s what’s new:
“For over 27 years, I have had the honor of working with one of the world’s greatest athletes, Tiger Woods. Through our partnership, we’ve seen Tiger not only redefine the sport of golf, but work with the world to break down barriers for the entire sport. We’ve seen him set records, challenge conventional thinking, and inspire generations of people around the world. We are grateful to be a part of it. “We wish him all the best for his future.”
The long-standing partnership has long been rumored to end when the 10-year contract Woods signed in 2013 expires. Asked about his future with Nike at the PNC Championship last December, Woods replied: “I’m still wearing Nike products.” I still wear that product.”
Since turning pro in 1996, Woods has worn only Woods products. Woods announced the decision at the famous “Hello, World” press conference that Knight attended before making his professional debut at the Great Milwaukee Open. Woods signed a five-year, $40 million contract to wear the Swoosh before he ever hit a shot as a pro. Since then, his lucrative contract with Nike has continued to grow, which is one of the reasons why he was ranked the highest-paid athlete in the world by Forbes from 2002 to 2011. Over the years, Woods has appeared in numerous Nike commercials and worn his red Sunday jersey in a number of ways. Woods plans to make his 2024 PGA Tour debut at the Genesis Invitational next month. But it remains to be seen what he will wear in LA.
