Sad news: The Boston Red Sox paid $60 million for a veteran player.
The Boston Red Sox didn’t do much to add to their overall talent lead this winter, as most of their additions came at similar costs.
In your rotation, consider trading Tyler O’Neal for righty Alex Verdugo or Lucas Giolito for Chris Sale. But both movements have some depth. One of the areas with the most turnovers so far has been the bullpen, a trend that continued Wednesday.
The Seattle Mariners have acquired right-hander Mauricio Llovera from the Red Sox, according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. Llovera was designated for assignment last week to make room for fellow right-hander Lucas Gilito and has not returned to the Red Sox organization. In theory, he could return as a relief player against depth on the 40-man roster. The 27-year-old posted a 24-for-13 strikeout ratio, .264 batting average, 1.52 WHIP and 5.46 ERA in 29.2 innings with the Red Sox last season.
He was acquired by former Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Blum just days before Major League Baseball’s trade deadline. The only player added at the time was Luis Urias, who was traded to the Mariners for righty Isaiah Campbell.
The Red Sox open the season in Seattle on March 28, so they won’t have to wait long to compete against two of their former starters.
