In a statement shared on Twitter (see above), the 15-time champion thanked the sporting goods giant for its support. Woods recalled that he signed a contract with the brand in 1996, at the age of 20. This partnership earned him an estimated US$500 million (S$745 million) in nearly 30 years, making him golf’s first billionaire. It is not known if and who will sign Tiger’s next contract, but he assured fans that “there is still a chapter ahead.”

Nike golf sales reached $792 million in 2013 as Woods won the PGA Tour and major championships. There has been speculation for months that Nike is considering a complete exit from its golf business, which makes up a small portion of the company’s total revenue and has been valued at $51.5 billion over the past four quarters.
