The Green Bay Packers are concerned about making the postseason with the youngest team to make the playoffs since the Buffalo Bills in 1974. However, his role as a potential spoiler in the Dallas Cowboys matchup could have major implications for the rest of the league.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has coach Mike McCarthy in the right position for the playoffs. The Cowboys appear willing to move on from McCarthy if the team escapes this month’s short deadline. The Cowboys will have to move quickly to land a head coach as both picks are already receiving calls from multiple teams. The Seattle Seahawks are interested in Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. But the biggest free agent deal in the league could be Thursday morning after Bill Belichick and the New Eberflus Patriots announced they had parted ways without officially seeking a trade. According to Mike Florio of NBC Sports, Jones told Belichick decades ago that he would be willing to hire the New England Patriots legend as the Cowboys’ head coach. Belichick also impressed the Cowboys.
“Here’s what Belichick said about Jones before the Patriots play the Cowboys in the 2023 regular season: “I have a lot of respect for Jerry and Steven and the way they run the organization. They have been successful for decades.
They were the ’90s team with Jimmy [Johnson] and they were really good. They have gone above and beyond the competition every year. They had a lot of great players. Tony [Romo] had a great game.
“It was a great time with coach Tony [Bill] Parcells. I played them in the early 2000s, but I always follow them to see what’s going on. They have a lot of players, I don’t mean big names, but free agents, players that they discovered there. I think their intelligence officers are doing a good job. They are very experienced. Almost all of our scouts have spent their entire careers with the Cowboys, so you can raise them at home and learn the system. “I think they are very good at managing their employees.”
Belichick, 71, doesn’t want to rebuild the team. The Cowboys would be a great franchise for Belichick to go into this season and have a Super Bowl in future seasons.
Belichick’s best chance to become the head coach of the Cowboys is if McCarthy loses this weekend to his former team, the Packers. The longer the Cowboys stay in the playoffs, the more likely Belichick will find another candidate or the Cowboys will keep McCarthy.
