The impressive numbers behind Rory McIlroy’s incredible three-putt
The Ulsterman looked set to take the lead at the Dubai Invitational, but that was not to be.
Rory McIlroy invited to Dubai
Rory McIlroy may have had plenty of good performances last weekend in Dubai, but it was the 2ft 3in who grabbed the most attention, at least on social media. But despite five birdies on the back nine, McIlroy’s Ryder Cup teammate won after McIlroy found the water with his final putt.
McIlroy looked like a man on a mission when he hit a stunning putt from 2 feet on the par-3 14th, so you might wonder how that could have happened. The four-time major champion had a chance to win, but not only did he make a birdie, he also missed his comeback attempt.
Despite birdies on the next hole and the 17th, a bogey on the 18th opened the door for Fleetwood and the Englishman won his seventh DP World Tour title with a 16 perfect foot. Critics were quick to jump on McIlroy’s short-term woes on Wednesday.
According to golf statistician Lou Stagner, there have been 20,101 first putts from 24 inches since 2005, and only three of them were threes. This makes it possible to create two holes, or 99.985% fewer holes. In other words, McIlroy scored well by at least one shot. Overall, McIlroy said he was pleased with his performance but admitted some “sloppy mistakes” came at the wrong time.
“It’s been a really positive week from the start,” said McIlroy, who is tied for second with South Africa’s Triston Lawrence. Rory McIlroy
A couple of tee shots earned Rory McIlroy his 17th DP World Tour title at the Dubai Invitational.
“Looking back today, I hit a water shot on the 9th hole in the first round, I 3-putted and I hit a water ball on the last hole.
“I think we have to expect that there will be mistakes in the first week when I come back. Unfortunately, some of these mistakes came at the wrong time.
“I’m going to think about it and learn from today. There’s still a lot of good stuff in there. I just need to clean up some of the edges.”
McIlroy hopes to be sharper on the greens when he tries to take on them and Augusta in April. Receive our monthly golf newsletter
