Red Sox’ Roman Anthony Named MLB’s 8th-Best Prospect

Baseball Prospectus has revealed their list of the Top 101 prospects in baseball and the Boston Red Sox have four prospects that land in the top 60.

Baseball Prospectus recently unveiled its highly anticipated list of the top 101 prospects in baseball, and the Boston Red Sox emerged with an impressive showing, boasting four prospects within the top 60.

Leading the charge is the dynamic 19-year-old outfielder, Roman Anthony, who secured the #8 spot on the prestigious list. Anthony’s stock skyrocketed last season as he demonstrated a remarkable blend of power, speed, and plate discipline across three developmental levels.

The 2022 second-round draft pick ascended through the Red Sox system, reaching as high as Double-A Portland. In just 10 games with Portland, Anthony showcased his prowess with an impressive 1.020 OPS. MLB.com recognizes Anthony as Boston’s #2 overall prospect.

Next in line is the 21-year-old shortstop, Marcelo Mayer, securing the 32nd spot on Baseball Prospectus’ Top 101. Mayer, the 4th overall pick in the 2021 draft, has compiled an impressive professional resume, slashing .261/.351/.460 over three seasons. Although his previous season was cut short due to a shoulder injury, Mayer has been diligently rehabbing in Ft. Myers this offseason. MLB.com ranks Mayer as Boston’s #1 overall prospect.

A potential steal from the 2023 draft, catcher Kyle Teel, emerges as the #47 prospect on the list. Despite having only one professional season and 26 games under his belt, Teel has made a substantial impact, boasting an impressive slash line of .363/.483/.495. Notably, Teel’s offensive prowess is complemented by his proficiency behind the plate, where he threw out 29% of would-be base stealers last season.

With such a promising skill set, Teel could find himself on the fast track to the majors in 2024. MLB.com recognizes Teel as Boston’s #4 overall prospect.

Rounding out the quartet of Red Sox prospects is the 23-year-old outfielder, Ceddanne Rafalea. Rafalea earned a call-up to the majors towards the end of the previous season, delivering a solid performance with a .241/.381/.386 slash line in 89 plate appearances.

Renowned for his elite defensive skills across the diamond, Rafalea received recognition as Boston’s Minor League Defensive Player of the Year in both 2021 and 2022. MLB.com ranks Rafalea as Boston’s #3 overall prospect.

The Red Sox organization can undoubtedly look forward to the exciting potential these prospects bring, offering a glimpse into the promising future of Boston’s baseball landscape.
