A driver died in an accident at the Formula 1 circuit in Miami.

A driver has died in a car crash after violence broke out near the Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Miami.

The incident happened Thursday at 1:45 p.m. local time, when the driver of a gray Dodge coupe was thrown on the Florida Turnpike, heading northwest toward 199th Street. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed the crash and death after the driver’s car jumped a barrier, crashed into a bridge wall and landed among palm trees on a section of the F1 circuit below.

Firefighters said a male driver was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from an overturned vehicle at Turn 16 of the race track. The accident is currently under investigation.

The Miami Grand Prix debuted in 2022, and given the urban setting, it may have the feel of a street circuit, but it’s a permanent-style track surrounded by temporary infrastructure, so without racing, all is lost.

So far Max Verstappen is the only driver to win a lap. He won with Red Bull in 2022 and was on course to win the World Championship in both years last season.
