The 29-year-old striker joined Rovers on loan from League Two rivals Wrexham earlier this month. Waters, whose previous clubs included Barrow and Cheltenham, made few appearances for the Welsh club in the first half of the season and happily signed up for DN4. “When my agent called and said ‘Doncaster want you’ I thought yes, I wanted to do it because Doncaster is a big club,” he told the Lower League Look podcast. “I wanted to go out and play. I used to go to Wreckham every day to train, I loved training and keeping fit. But I said I would go if the right club came along and I think Doncaster is the right club.
“I want to score goals, play well and be part of something. We hope to win this race. I have joined and it is a very good group. “I really like the manager and I think because of the fans we are starting to grow in the league.”
Waters made his debut for Doncaster against Newport, scoring on the hour mark before being substituted. Despite only being at Rovers for two weeks, he says he is enjoying the atmosphere here. “It wasn’t a hard sell for me,” he adds. “People who have played under Grant McCann in the past have always spoken highly of him. As soon as I saw this club, one of my best friends, Jack Senior, was here, I was excited about it. Part of the motivation is exposure and re-classification. “I’ve only been here for about a week, but I really like it.”
Rovers will have a busy week before hosting Stockport County on Saturday, making their first appearance in 11 days after last weekend’s trip to Bradford City was postponed.
A new date is expected to be announced soon. Rovers also face rivals West Yorkshire in the quarter-finals of the EFL Trophy on Tuesday, January 30.
