The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs are two of the oldest rivals in the National Hockey League. The hatred between the two teams runs deep and the fanbases are always at odds.

Even when players are retired and no longer part of the on-ice shenanigans between the two teams, they still find a way to stay involved in the rivalry.

Recent evidence of that came out once again when a former Canadiens defenseman called out the Toronto Maple Leafs head coach online.

The Maple Leafs are in a bit of a skid at the moment, losing five of six games recently. After a great start they are barely hanging on to a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Their only win in theat six game slide was a comeback 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames where Auston Matthews put the team on his back.

It led to P.K. Subban asking on Twitter if the team could win a game without their star center scoring a hat trick. When questioned about his comment, Subban elaborated to say the team can’t win by relying on their star player to carry the team offensively and expecting him to score hat tricks every night to win the game.

Subban further went on to question Sheldon Keefe. He said the coach needs to galvanize his team and get everyone involved so it is not a one man show. He also questioned the team’s structure and said it is clearly not working if the team keeps giving up leads on a regular basis.

It does matter! can’t win 4 rounds in the playoffs playing that way. It’s not a switch u can just turn on come April! Thats on how the roster gets managed. Can’t expect to have flow on a team where Matthews has to save your bacon every night. As a coach you have to get…

We should not be surprised to see a former Montreal Canadiens player calling out someone from the Maple Leafs. Especially an outspoken player like Subban who isn’t afraid to say what is on his mind.

He certainly does have a point about the Maple Leafs. While they don’t exactly only lean on Matthews, their big three of Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander do score most of the team’s goals. Their coach has also not been able to prove he can make the right adjustments to win when it matters most.

As if the Canadiens and Maple Leafs needed another log on the fire for their rivalry. Subban has clearly decided to pour some gasoline on it anyway.
