Three-time Ryder Cup star Hunter Mahan has named Tiger Woods as Team USA captain for the next two games as he seeks revenge for defeat at Rome 2023.
The 15-time major winner was largely absent as Zach Johnson led his compatriot to a 16-12 loss to Marco Simona. The European side have left their opponents winless on the road since 1993 and have suffered seven consecutive defeats on trips to the United States.
Now, as the USA seek quick revenge in New York next year, calls for Woods to replace Johnson as captain have steadily grown. Other contenders, including Phil Mickelson and former vice-captain Stuart Sink, had mixed reactions to the prospect of a move to the top job.
He has ruled himself out in the past, saying he was too “divided” to take on the role of captain. However, the latter is recognized.
