Sligo Rovers goalkeeper Luke McNicholas seals permanent Wrexham move

Sligo Rovers goalkeeper Luke McNicholas has completed a move to League 2 side Wrexham for an undisclosed fee.

McNicholas joined the Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney-owned club on a loan move in the summer with a view to a permanent switch.

He has been third choice at the club as they move towards back-to-back promotions.

The former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international has signed a two-and-a-half year contract at the Welsh side.

The Mayo man is one of six Irish players at the club with James McClean, Anthony Forde, Thomas O’Connor, Eoghan O’Connell and Liam McAlinden already in their squad.

He spent just over a year as number one goalkeeper with Sligo before Wrexham made their move.

The 24-year-old said: “I’m absolutely delighted. Since I’ve come over, I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s been a great group to come into, they’ve been really welcoming, and I’m really pleased to finally make my deal here a permanent one.

“I’m going to keep pushing in training, and to continue learning from the goalkeepers at the club to hopefully get my chance and the number one spot at some point in the future.”

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said McNicholas has done enough to warrant the transfer: “When we signed Luke, we did so with the protection of an option to make his signing permanent this month, if he impressed us.

“He’s a good young goalkeeper, we’re enjoying working with him and he has impressed during his time with us, so we are delighted to complete his permanent signing.”
