Seles Would Have Enjoyed ‘Phenomenal’ Mixed Doubles Partnership With Djokovic
Former WTA great Monica Seles said that she would like to play in the same era as Novak Djokovic, especially since our compatriots could join forces to form a strong mixed doubles team.
Djokovic continued his strong form in 2023 and 2024, reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open, where the Serb will face Yannick Sinner. The impressive performance follows last season’s success which saw the world number one win the Australian Open, Roland Garros and the US Open.
These three titles bring Serbia’s Grand Slam total to 24. Seles, a former player who won nine major titles and was born in Serbia but moved to the United States, said in an interview with Sport Klub that he always knew Djokovic would set a new standard in men’s tennis.
“I stopped counting Novak Djokovic’s Grand Slam wins a long time ago. I have known for a long time that he will break all records and set very difficult records for the next generation.”
This season at least, Djokovic looks set to continue his fight to increase his Grand Slam total, starting with the defense of his Australian Open title. As a result, the 36-year-old’s retirement date remains uncertain as he continues to push the envelope.
Looking back on his and Djokovic’s careers, Seles believes the duo would make a formidable mixed doubles team. Furthermore, the former Yugoslavian-American expressed his gratitude for their support as he cheered on the world No. 1 to win the Australian Open.
“I want us to play in the same era. It would be great if we could play together, I think it would be great,” he said.
“Thank you Novak Djokovic for your appreciation and respect, let’s win the Australian Open.”
