Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds set to sign in January! Wrexham are in preliminary talks to sign Salford City midfielder Luke Bolton.

Wrexham are close to completing the transfer of Salford City midfielder Luke Bolton as they seek a final squad upgrade.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the Red Dragons made a bid for the Manchester City academy graduate, but he was soon knocked down by Salford. However, according to Footy Insider Peter O’Rourke, the two sides have held talks in the meantime to improve Wrexham’s offer and complete a deal. The midfielder will be Phil Parkinson’s first January signing as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s club remain patient in negotiations. Speaking to The Athletic last week, Parkinson explained why the club did not make any reinforcements in January like some of their rivals. He said: “There are a lot of investigations going on, but there are also good players ready to make a big contribution. If there is a player who can improve us, we will move. We are always looking. This can be a bit of a poker game as it is a competitive endeavor when trying to recruit players. “I have heard time and time again that there is no money in football. But when we tried to take a player, we were told there was no need to sell because we didn’t need the money. Players can be difficult to deal with.”

Bolton made his professional debut in 2019, aged 19, on loan at Wycombe Wanderers. Despite being on the books of Premier League champions City until 2022, he has never played in a first-team match. Bolton signed for Salford after leaving the Premier League champions in January 2022. Over the next two years, he appeared in 92 games for Carl Robinson’s side, providing 15 assists and scoring six goals. The Red Dragons are also currently looking for a striker to strengthen their attack. However, there is little time left until the transfer is completed. The club are set to face Salford and if Bolton can get a deal done, the midfielder could play against his former club just days after leaving the club.
