Formula 1 expert Karun Chandhok says Lewis Hamilton has lost faith in championship-winning Mercedes.
Hamilton, who recently turned 39, surprised F1 fans earlier this week when it was confirmed he had agreed to drive for rivals Ferrari in 2025. The news comes just five months after he signed a new multi-year deal with Mercedes. Although his contract with the Brackley side he managed for the past 11 years had a release clause allowing him to leave. .
Having last won a World Championship in 2020 and not winning a race since 2021, many believe Hamilton’s move is sentimental or that Ferrari is more likely to help him win an eighth world title. The 40-year-old former F1 and Formula E driver took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to weigh in on the shocking news. “I tried to understand, ‘Where is the logic of Ferrari’s move?'” Chandhok wrote.
“Maybe not…Lewis has more money than he can spend, he hasn’t won a race in over two years and maybe his heart yearns for a new challenge.” Winning an eighth title with Ferrari would be a great legacy!”
Chandhok told Sky Sports News there could be a reason for Hamilton’s decision: “He is very aware of his position as a global representative on a variety of issues.

“Ferrari haven’t really participated in the same sponsorship scheme as Mercedes and they probably see that as a way of taking down probably the biggest brand in Formula 1. Importantly, there are two years left in this regulatory cycle. 2025 is the last year of the current cycle.
“To me, the fact that he’s 25 years old probably means he thinks this year is not going to be good because his car is not swinging. It declines until 2025. “Because I bought a new car in 2026. So for me that’s a sign that Lewis said, ‘I don’t like what I’ve seen before.’ I think we’re going to have a tough time in 2024 and ’25. I might go there in 2025, drive a Ferrari and start 2026 with new rules.
