CLEVELAND – The city of Cleveland plans to cut police officers from its budget for the second year in a row. City officials said this was due to a staffing crisis in the department. For two years we have been saying that the department is dangerously inadequate. In addition, Mayor Justin Bibb’s budget proposal would increase funding for the police department to cover salary increases and the cost of new equipment. But some are concerned that Cleveland plans to cut its police force for the second time in two years.

Five years ago, Andre Brown was shot and killed on the city’s east side. “This is a daily battle. “There are still times when I can’t get out of bed,” says her mother, Michelle Bell. Brown’s murder remains unsolved. Belle wonders if that will happen. He continued: “As the number of new patients continues to increase, the number of cold patients and existing patients is also increasing.”

because? CPD plans to reduce its total number of officers from 1,498 to 1,350.

Cleveland Chief Financial Officer Ahmed Abonama called 1,498 police officers “unrealistic and impossible.” “The mayor estimates that the deployment of more than 1,350 resources will free up funds that can be used for other positive outcomes in the city,” Abonama said.

Cleveland Police Chief Wayne Drummond doesn’t see the officer’s firing as a humiliation for the department. “This is not a reduction in funding. Our budget has increased by about $13 million,” Drummond said. Budget 2024 increases the department’s funding to approximately $231 million.

The CEO said this includes higher spending, sign-on bonuses and other incentives to increase employee retention and recruitment. On February 1, the number of police officers was only 1,175. “So we won’t give up. We will never give up.”

When I asked the chief if Cleveland was able to effectively police the city, he replied, “We’re effectively the police in the city right now.”

Bell, who has a background in accounting, believes it would be a mistake to cut the number of police officers in the budget. “If you set a budget and say, ‘Oh, I don’t need this, it’s hard to get it back,'” Bell said.

Police say violent crime is currently down year-over-year, but data shows little change between 2022 and 2023, and when the city deploys about 300 more officers than currently proposed, the crime rate is still higher than pre-pandemic level. Cleveland City Council President Blaine Griffin released the following statement:

“Today we received the projected budget. Continued cuts in government support for Cleveland police are concerning. Last year, the City Council accepted budget cuts with the understanding that the city would work with an outside marketing agency to hire new officials. We await the results of their work. If the city needs help from outside agencies, including the state highway patrol, the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Marshals Service, to fight the crime wave, reducing the number of police officers needed in the city requires discussion additional.

“At the budget hearing, we will look at the proposals, learn more about their rationale and determine whether the proposals to reduce the number of uniformed police officers are in the best interests of our residents.”
