Theo Epstein earned a new job title last week in his return to the Boston Red as a part owner of Fenway Sports Group and senior advisor.
So what is Epstein’s responsibility with the Red Sox?
Red Sox president Sam Kennedy offered some insight into Epstein’s role Monday while speaking with reporters at the team’s Truck Day event at Fenway Park. According to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, Kennedy said Epstein, who was the Red Sox’s general manager for nine seasons from 2003 to 2011, will not be involved in the day-to-day operations of the Red Sox. He is a valuable voice not only for FSG owners John Henry, Tom Werner, Mike Gorman and Kennedy, but also for new baseball boss Craig Breslow.
According to Cotillo, Kennedy told reporters, “He has good relationships in the front office, and I think the senior adviser role helps him make important decisions and think about short-term issues and long-term issues.” .
Kennedy added, “If you have the opportunity to be inducted into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot as a member of your organization, that’s great. I am interested in becoming an owner. He invested in Fenway Sports Group. From his perspective, this sends a message that there is a lot of confidence and trust in this ownership group. But again, we have to do the right thing in baseball operations and get the team back where it belongs.”
