Helmut Marko explains Max Verstappen theory as Mercedes line up Lewis Hamilton replacement

Helmut Marko believes that Toto Wolff has already given Max Verstappen a call about potentially replacing Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes from 2025 onwards. The seven-time world champion exercised an exit clause in his contract, meaning the Silver Arrows are in need of a new star driver come the end of the season.

Hamilton has been the star of the Mercedes team for over a decade now, and the 2024 season represents his 12th season with the Brackley-based team. However, with the hunt for his record-breaking eighth World Championship still on, the 39-year-old has decided that it is time for a change.

This leaves Wolff in an interesting position heading into what promises to be one of the most chaotic silly seasons in recent memory. With no immediate contingency plan prepared, the likes of Alex Albon, Fernando Alonso and even retired four-time champion Sebastian Vettel have all been touted as potential options.

That said, the most compelling replacement from Wolff’s point of view would be Verstappen, and Marko believes that the Mercedes boss has likely already made contact. “I would be surprised if they hadn’t,” he told Krone Zeitung. “But Max is a very loyal driver.”

While planning is already underway to find Hamilton’s replacement, the legendary Brit still has one final season in Mercedes colours to come. After a promising start to the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend, there is hope that the 39-year-old can end his iconic partnership with the German constructor in style.

“Lewis is an exceptional driver,” Marko explained. “If they give him a car that is capable of winning [races] or even a World Championship, they will have to involve him until the end, and so just jump over their shadow.”
