Woods received the award “in recognition of his commitment to sportsmanship and respect for golf’s time-honored traditions,” according to a USGA press release. Rarely has there been a more deserving champion. Boasting his 15 wins in major championships and his 82 wins on the PGA Tour, Woods has accomplished more and changed the world of golf more than anyone in recent decades. “This award goes beyond athletic accomplishments and recognizes the lasting impact of one man’s journey that forever changed the image and development of golf,” USGA CEO Mike Wang said in a press release. . “Few people can match Tiger Woods in terms of his performance on the course, and he is in a class of his own in terms of the impact he has had on the game and the future generations that will play it.”
