Luke Humphries’ nine-match winning streak in the Premier League was ended by a pumped-up Luke Littler in Belfast last night.

In another pulsating episode of the Lukes of Hazard, world champ Humphries’ bid for an unprecedented fourth nightly win fell short as the 17-year-old edged a quarter-final thriller 6-5. Luke the Nuke’s seven 180 maximums and 102.02 average proved too much for Cool Hand Luke, who had won in Brighton, Nottingham and Dublin.

And now Littler is standing by for a call-up to play football – in Soccer Aid at Stamford Bridge come June. Littler was a robust centre-half as a schoolboy until his father advised him to concentrate on darts but he said: “I’d be up for that, 100 per cent. I’ve seen they have gone about 10 people down so, if they are watching – get me in. But I’m definitely not playing in goal if I play Soccer Aid. Up front.”

Peter Wright joined Littler in the final four on night nine, only to lose his semi-final clash to Nathan Aspinall. Snakebite had looked impressive in the quarters as he downed Rob Cross 6-3 for just his second win of this campaign. Aspinall had edged out Gerwyn Price 6-5 and then, after falling behind to Wright, battled back to take control as he eventually ran out an impressive 6-2 winner.
