Wrexham AFC are tantalisingly close to an extraordinary promotion to League One, a feat that seemed almost impossible just a few years ago.
In simple terms, Wrexham need five points from their last three games to secure consecutive automatic promotions and guarantee League One football at the Racecourse Ground next season.
The weekend always brings added excitement with various outcomes possible. If Wrexham can take all three points against Forest Green Rovers at home, and MK Dons and Barrow fail to overcome Mansfield Town and Gillingham respectively, Hollywood co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds will savour the joy of back-to-back promotions in English football.
This would be the first time in Wrexham’s 159-year history that they have achieved successive promotions, and it’s been since the 2004-05 season that the Red Dragons have played in the third tier of English football.
Reynolds and McElhenney often go to extreme lengths to watch Reds games, whether in person or while working across the other side of the Atlantic.
Reynolds, dressed in what appeared to be pilot gear, posted a shot of him watching the game on a huge screen while working on his new film with the caption: “Watching the @wrexham_afc game at work: new level unlocked.”

Wrexham’s victory has placed them second in the League Two table, trailing four points behind leaders Stockport County, who have a game in hand. Currently, Stockport are the clear favourite to secure the League Two title.
However, unlike the chaotic National League, Wrexham only needs to finish within the top three of League Two to gain automatic promotion. With 79 points from 43 games this season, securing five points from their remaining three matches would be enough to clinch it, starting with Saturday’s home game against Forest Green.
Yet, if Mansfield Town, currently third-placed with 76 points from 42 games, don’t lose to fourth-placed MK Dons (74 points from 43 games), and Barrow, sixth-placed with 67 points from 41 games, fail to defeat Gillingham, who are 13th with 60 points from 43 games and still vying for a play-off spot, and Wrexham also triumph over Forest Green, then promotion will be confirmed on Saturday.
Achieving consecutive automatic promotions isn’t unheard of. Since the introduction of direct promotion from non-league levels, 10 clubs have managed to leap from the fifth to the third tier within two years, with Tranmere Rovers being the last to do so five years ago.
The spotlight has been firmly on Wrexham since their Hollywood takeover, with the club’s recent financial figures drawing significant attention. Last month’s accounts revealed a near doubling of annual turnover to an impressive £10.4million, while operating losses jumped from £2.9million to £5.1million and debts to the new co-owners increased to £8.98million.
Despite these figures, the club maintains that such losses “shouldn’t be repeated”, thanks to the substantial revenue from retail sales, which hit £3.4million million. It’s also worth noting that the latest financial statements don’t account for the lucrative deals with United Airlines, Expedia, and TikTok, nor the income from last summer’s extensive tou
