Five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods sounded confident during Tuesday’s press conference announcing the 2024 Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia.

Woods told reporters at Augusta National Golf Club that he feels he can win this week despite health issues and recent limited play. “If everything goes well, I think we’ll get another one,” Woods said.

Woods, 48, has been plagued by numerous injuries in recent years, a reality that raised questions about his golf mortality rate on Tuesday. Woods said his goal this season is to play golf once a month while dealing with various physical ailments, including a surgically repaired right ankle.

That goal was not achieved, as his last appearance was at the Genesis Invitational in late February due to back spasms. “Every shot off the tee is a challenge,” Woods said. “Once we start drilling the wells, it will be a bit of a test.”

Woods could set a Masters record this weekend by reaching a record 24 consecutive tournament appearances. He currently shares the record with Gary Player and Fred Perse (23).

Woods, who bowled 3-over after two rounds last year, needed second-half bogeys from Justin Thomas and Im Sung-jae to move the cut line from 2-over to 3-over. He attributed his success at Augusta National Golf Club to consistency, longevity and understanding of the course, the only major to play the same course year after year. Woods said knowing the course is the secret to older players’ success, and that some of the putts he made in the ’90s still play the same today. “You still have to go out and play, but it takes a lot of knowledge to understand how to play at Augusta National,” Woods said. “Every tee box and every green has changed since I first played, but the overall configuration of how they roll, how they move, their angles, etc. hasn’t changed.”

Woods also said his knowledge of the course has deepened due to his relationships with other players who have had success in the tournament. He did a couples training session this week.

It will be the future venue for TGL, a new stadium-based golf league launched in partnership with the PGA.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Woods gave his compatriot Rory McIlroy a vote of confidence.

McIlroy won the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship, but never on the Masters Tour.
