Tiger Woods said Tuesday he’s not looking at a ceremonial future as an Honorary Starter at the Masters, but he did not rule out a potential captaincy at the Ryder Cup next year at Bethpage Black.
“We’re still talking about it,” said Woods with a smile when asked about his position regarding the next U.S. captain’s role.
“It’s something that Seth (Waugh, CEO of the PGA of America) and I are going to sit back and talk about it after this event. I said I’m going to be busy for a couple weeks, so let me focus on getting through this week and hopefully getting another jacket, and then we can sit back and talk about it next week.”
Woods is considered a likely lock to captain the U.S. team when it tries to win for the first time in decades on European soil in Ireland at Adare Manor in 2027. But the Americans have yet to name a captain to face Luke Donald’s Europe squad in New York next year. That role was long expected to go to Phil Mickelson, but he’s unlikely to ever get a chance after his heel turn to join LIV Golf.
