Rory McIlroy filed for divorce from his wife Erica during the week of the PGA Championship in Kentucky.
The Northern Irishman filed a “petition for dissolution of marriage” in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Monday, according to court records. They married in 2017 and have one child, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, who was born in 2020.
A spokesperson for the golfer confirmed the news, saying it “underscored Rory’s desire to make this difficult time as respectful and amicable as possible.” The couple met in 2012 when Erica was working for the PGA of America during the Ryder Cup, and McIlroy provided a police escort to the course when she missed the start time of Sunday’s singles race. I was grateful for that.
McIlroy reached the green within minutes and beat Keegan Bradley, completing the “Miracle of Medina” as Europe recovered from a 10-6 deficit to retain the trophy. McIlroy, 35, filed for divorce the day after winning his fourth Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow.
The world number two is scheduled to address the media at Valhalla on Wednesday at 6pm (BST) in preparation for the second major men’s tournament of the year, which starts on Thursday. He won his fourth and final major tournament in 201
4 at Louisville.
