McIlroy filed for divorce from Stoll on Monday, three days before the start of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

The split was confirmed on Tuesday by McIlroy’s representatives and he was seen practicing for the major tournament hours later.

On Wednesday, Stoll was publicly spotted for the first time since the news broke in Florida without a wedding ring on her finger.

Stoll is believed to still be living at the couple’s lavish Jupiter, Florida mansion with their three-year-old daughter, Poppy Kennedy. And their neighbors are trying to figure out where things went wrong, via PEOPLE.

McIlroy and Stoll were married in 2017 after meeting in 2012 and were originally friends

‘Rory is fairly down to earth for such a big star,’ a source told PEOPLE. ‘However, he is very private and can be nice to be around but he just does NOT love the limelight.’

McIlroy and Stoll live inside the gate-guarded fertile golfing community of the Bear’s Club, where PEOPLE had another source tell them that their neighbors ‘are talking about this and wondering what happened’.

The 35-year-old McIlroy maintains a low profile with his private life, ‘so private that there wasn’t a lot of speculation concerning his family life,’ PEOPLE added. ‘We are wondering what happened’.

The couple met in 2012 when McIlroy was still dating tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. Months after McIlroy ended things with Wozniacki, Stoll and he were an item.

The now-36-year-old Stoll and McIlroy became engaged in 2015 and were married in 2017.

Halfway through the PGA Championship, McIlroy is sitting at five-under-par, seven strokes behind leader Xander Schauffele.

Stoll has largely stayed out of the public eye despite dating one of the most famous golfers on the planet. Her Instagram has been set to private since before the divorce was filed.
