Rory McIlroy’s neighbours react to Erica Stoll divorce after living close by to couple
Members of the exclusive Florida golf club frequented by Rory McIlroy have been left surprised by the news that the European golf superstar is set to divorce his wife Erica Stoll after seven years of marriage.
The Northern Irish star filed for divorce on May 13 – signalling the end of their ten-year relationship – as per court documents submitted in Palm Beach County. The couple first crossed paths in 2012 during the Ryder Cup and got into a relationship two years later, before getting married in 2017 with the likes of Stevie Wonder and Jamie Dornan in attendance at their star-studded wedding..
They then celebrated the birth of their daughter, Poppy, in August 2020. But they are now set to divorce, with McIlroy recently being spotted without his wedding band at the PGA Championship this week at Valhalla Golf Club. Furthermore, Stoll was also seen to be ringless on May 16.
Now, members of the South Florida community where the couple have resided for the past five years have been taken aback by the news of their separation. One source told PEOPLE: “Rory is fairly down to earth for such a big star. However, he is very private and can be nice to be around but he just does NOT love the limelight.”
The publication reports an insider who claims that members at Bear’s Club golf course, where the Northern Irish golfer plays, “are talking about this and wondering what happened”. They also described McIlroy as “so private that there wasn’t a lot of speculation concerning his family life”, before adding: “We are wondering what happened.”
The news of their divorce has come as a shock to many. Recalling how they first met, McIlroy told Golf Channel: “Erica was always the one checking us in and out that week.
“She was there at transportation, so she was always in the car park over there. But yeah, it’s still cool to look around and think about that week, and obviously everything that’s happened since then,” he said, expressing pride about their blossoming relationship, before adding: “It’s pretty cool.”
He also shared how their friendship evolved into romance, telling The Independent: “The thing I love about it is that we were friends before anything romantic happened. We ended up spending a bit of time together and realised that there was something more there.”
Reflecting on the support his partner provided throughout his career, McIlroy shared with the Irish Independent: “Erica has been around me quite a lot at tournaments but we have really just tried to keep it low-key. She is a very low-key person, not the kind to broadcast stuff, but that side of my life is really good just now.”
