Charges against Scottie Scheffler are still pending. Arresting officer will be disciplined for breaking rules
Louisville’s mayor and police chief said at a press conference Thursday morning that the officer who arrested Scottie Scheffler after his car crash at the PGA Championship last week was disciplined for allegedly failing to turn on his body camera. However, the four charges against Scheffler remain pending. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg acknowledged that the arresting officer, Detective Brian Gillis, did not have his body camera turned on during last Friday’s incident. Louisville Metropolitan Police Department policy requires officers to turn on their body cameras before “participating in any law enforcement activity or encounter.” Although video footage exists of Paul on the police car dashboard and in front of Valhalla, Greenberg claims there is no video of the incident itself. LMPD released these two videos immediately after the press conference ended. Greenberg said at the request of the Louisville Prosecutor’s Office, no further videos will be released until legal developments are complete. “Regarding the findings of our internal investigation, Detective Gillis had a meeting with Mr. Scotty Scheffler. Gillis should have turned on his body camera, but he didn’t,” Greenberg said. “It was a policy failure.”
Louisville Metro Police Chief Jacqueline Gwynn Villarroel said Gillis failed to activate his body camera and violated two house rules. Punishments for these mistakes include a mark on Mr. Gillis’ record with the department. Nevertheless, both Greenberg and Gwin Gowi Trawell said they would “respect the trial” and develop the process. This means that the accusation of the cheffler is currently waiting for some action from Jefferson (Kentoki).
The cheper was arrested near the Valhalago Golf Club on Friday morning on the second round of the 2024 PGA championship, and drives a transportation signal that leads to police officers, crime new, reckless driving, and transportation signals. I was accused of ignoring it. As Scheffler attempted to enter the club, he allegedly passed a police officer against his instructions. Scheffler claimed the incident was a misunderstanding, but the police report said Gillis was dragged by Scheffler’s car, causing injuries and damage to Gillis’ pants. Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, disputes the nature of the incident.
“[Scheffler] was acting at the direction of another traffic officer and was driving a player’s vehicle tagged with a visible identifier,” Romines said. “It is alleged that due to the confusion, Scotty ignored another officer’s traffic signals, resulting in charges being laid. Numerous eyewitnesses confirmed that he did nothing wrong, but was simply acting as directed. He immediately stopped after sending and never attacked an officer with his car at a time. We will judge on this question if necessary, and it will be fully justified. »»
The presentation of The Sheffler was initially scheduled for May 21, but was postponed until June 3. Romines told multiple media outlets that Schaeffler will plead not guilty. “Our position remains unchanged,” Romines said after a news conference on Thursday. “It will be rejected or it will go to trial. We are not interested in a settlement.»
Scheffler, who returned to Valhalla after Friday’s arrest, shot a 66 in the second round, but after admitting he was tired of the chaotic conditions, he fired a 73 to catch up. Scheffler bounced back with a final score of 65 and ultimately finished in 8th place. He is currently competing in the Charles Schwab Challenge, which will be held this week at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth starting at 1:45 p.m. ET. Time for the first round.
