Rory McIlory used this idea at the PGA Championship – and it worked
The fact that Rory Makilra said about his swing on the 2014 golf course -and he was showing it around 2024
Rory Makilra has occupied the best professional golf rank in most of the past decade. But in 2014, Rory Makira reached a level we had never seen before. Or maybe since.
As the PGA Championship returns to Valhalla Golf Club, site of McIlroy’s victory 10 years ago, let’s take a quick look back at some of these changes in golf and how they came about… If you recall, McIlroy’s 2013 season wasn’t great. After consecutive seasons of major wins, he crashed to Earth. A winless season, combined with T-25, T-41, MC and T-8 rankings in his four seasons, led many to speculate that his recent switch to Nike gear was the cause of his slump.

Despite the continued slump narrative, some signs emerged in early 2014 that McIlroy had returned to form and victories were imminent. Including what he himself declared in March of the same year…
What’s interesting about McIlroy’s golf game at this point is that he knew what his bad habits were (more on that later), but he wasn’t aware of any of these changes in his golf game. I mean, I didn’t know exactly how to adapt. good. As McIlroy explains, things started to change at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in early 2014.
“A coach can tell you the perfect way to swing a golf club, but once a little light bulb goes on in his head and he starts to understand it, he starts to master his own swing. Because someone could stand here and tell you where and how to get a putter, but once you figure it out yourself and understand your feelings and what you have to do. Because only then can you truly feel comfortable. And. After finishing all my work in Dubai, I felt like I really understood what I needed to do.
Technically, the “bad habit” he says he picked up in 2013 was that his arms would “catch” behind his body during economic downturns. This is a trend we see among many players who prefer draws. For McIlroy, it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Dropping his arms to the inside and swinging out to the right made it hard for him to hit fades. So, he hit more and more draws, which caused him to swing more and more from in-to-out. Until the end, his gathering became serious, and his common sequence fought with tea.
\ “I threw it too much from the inside and attacked from the inside, and I always arrived in a draw … I didn’t have the confidence to hit different shots off the tee or move the ball from left to right. ”
He talked about his tendency to have to spread his arms out during the backswing. He calls it too “right-sided” during the backswing. When this happens, he begins to move outward and around his body, which causes the stuck problem he was talking about.
“I feel like the work I put into the game of golf from age 15 to 20 will see me throughout my entire career. My golf swing sometimes falls apart, but I know its parameters and know how to get it back on track. ”
The camera angles aren’t perfect, but you can get a rough idea of the main differences below. McIlroy’s club follows flatter ground in his 2013 (left) and 2024 (center) swings, but notice how it has changed at this point in his 2014 swing. . “I’m confident in what I’m doing, I’m working on my swing with that confidence, I’m making swings that I feel comfortable with, and I’m seeing the shots that I want to see…last week. Since I often hit my tee shot to the right, I felt like I was swinging well and was able to get it back on plane, allowing me to comfortably hit shots from left to right. That’s when I talk about how I handle the ball better, but I feel like the ball was on a tighter line and I was able to hit both shots. ”
