Rory McIlroy Reveals Regret Over How ‘Deeply Involved’ He Got In LIV vs PGA Tour Civil War.
Rory McIlroy has admitted he became too “deeply involved” in the men’s game’s civil war
Rory McIlroy is participating in the RBC Canadian Open this week, marking his return to competition since the PGA Championship.
The upcoming tournament is expected to have a more stable environment compared to the 2023 edition, which faced uncertainty due to the PGA Tour starting negotiations with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) about coexisting with LIV Golf.
“Following a year of disagreements among top officials in the sport, McIlroy emerged as a key supporter of the PGA Tour in response to the threat posed by LIV Golf.”
While talks are still ongoing between the PGA Tour and PIF, cooler heads have prevailed over the last year and, ahead of this week’s tournament, McIlroy reflected on his involvement in golf’s civil war and admitted he’d become too “deeply involved.”
“I think, in hindsight, I wish I hadn’t have gotten involved or not hadn’t gotten involved, hadn’t have gotten as deeply involved in it, and I’ve articulated that,” he explained. “I hold no grudge, I hold no resentment over the guys that chose to go and play on LIV. Everyone’s got their own decisions to make and everyone is, has the right to make those decisions.”
McIlroy has expressed remorse for his level of participation in LIV Golf but acknowledges that his main worry since its inception two years ago is the negative impact it has had on the men’s professional golf circuit as a whole.
He went on to express his disappointment about the effect on men’s professional golf and the current divide within the sport.
