Gambling is everywhere on the PGA tour. As you walk around, you can see a man playing money. Lurk by the putting green and you’ll hear ’em talking football. Listen to the chatter from the crowd and you’ll know who they’re pulling for and who they’re wishing evil upon. Think hard enough about it and you’ll come to the conclusion that the very act of turning pro is just making one big bet on yourself. So it was hardly a shocker that once the Tour started digging through its players’ sports betting histories it uncovered a few instances of guys gambling in ways that strayed outside its policies. In case you missed it, the tour announced on Friday that it had suspended two Korn Ferry Tour players, Jake Staiano and Vince India, for violating the PGA Tour betting and integrity program. And the biggest surprise to me wasn’t what they found out about the two guys. They haven’t found it anymore. STian and India have been stopped for three months and six months, respectively. But that wasn’t the case for the Chicago Black Sox. The tour failed to specify that no betting was taking place on the tournaments they were participating in, the equivalent of a baseball player placing a double bet on a major league game. Listening to Staiano’s explanation, this was never a big-money business.
Staiano, 27, explained during an appearance on Ryan French’s podcast “Any Given Monday” that he made a total of four bets in 2021. One of those was Bryson DeChambeau birdieing a particular hole in the tournament, and the other three came in an exhibition match between DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in Las Vegas this fall. Staiano said the four bets totaled $116.20. He has now been sidelined for three months.
For a top PGA Tour pro, skipping this three-month fall stretch would hardly be a punishment at all. But for Staiano, a guy battling to recapture his Korn Ferry Tour status, missing this stretch means missing Q-school. That means putting the dream on hold for another year.
To his credit, Staiano took full responsibility. He said the policy was clear and he acknowledged he had violated it. But it was a shocking reminder that in an era dominated by discussion about golfers making unprecedented millions of dollars, $116.20 can also be career-changing. At the LPGA Tour’s inaugural Maybank Championship in Malaysia, Celine Boutier won a nine-hole (!!) playoff with Attaya Thitikul after sharing the lead with a Sunday 64. A long duel ensued, with the two ultimately tied. After par-birdie-par-par-birdie, Boutier made the deciding birdie putt on the 18th green to finish just one hole shy of the LPGA record of 10 holes in a playoff. This is Boutier’s fourth win of the season and sixth of her career. She is currently leading the LPGA Player of the Year award.
